Summary
Ryden Nmet is a compassionate and empathetic Ba’Ku, he is deeply attuned to the emotions of those around him. Being born on the serene planet of Ba’Ku, Ryden has had centuries to hone his skills and carries the wisdom of his people’s traditional values while striving to bridge the gap between simplicity and progress. He is known well for his warm and approachable nature. And that he has an uncanny ability to make others feel cared for and understood. Often becoming the center of attention for any room. He intuitively picks up on physical stress response and a persons overall mood. This gift for seeing beyond the surface became a cornerstone of his identity.
Ryden finds great joy in listening to others stories, learning about them, and offering heartfelt advice. These traits that have made him a trusted confidant both on his homeworld and beyond. Though once conflicted about his people’s resistance to technology, his journey into interstellar care has opened many doors to let him see the galaxy and given him a fulfilling sense of purpose. He embraces mindfulness practices but pairs them with modern psychiatry to create a unique and healing approach to mental health.
His quirks, such as a tendency to hum softly when deep in thought as well as an obsessive habit of collecting small tokens from each place he visits, make him endearing to those he meets. Ryden never hesitates to strike up conversation about philosophy, the universe, or simply how someone is doing. Recognised by his people as a trailblazer with a heart of gold, Ryden embodies the harmonious blend of Ba’Ku tradition, Betazoid practices and Starfleet modernity, serving as both a healer and a bridge between worlds.
His greatest wish is to help the next person.
Appearance
Ryden is a Polynesian looking man from Ba’Ku. His skin is a warm copperbronze, catching the light with a kind of inner glow, as though the very energy of Ba’Ku has soaked into him over the years. He moves with a casual confidence, not showy or exaggerated, but the kind you only get from a life lived close to the land. He seems grounded, physically capable, and completely at ease in his own skin.
He’s just under six feet tall with a medium build that suggests strength without bulk. His body reflects the habits of someone who works with his hands and walks long distances, someone who rarely sits still for long. His black hair, thick and a little wavy, hangs just to his shoulders and is usually tied back to keep it out of his eyes. Sometimes there’s a strip of hand-dyed cloth tied into it, not for fashion, but because it’s what the people in his village do. It holds quiet meaning.
There’s something about Ryden’s face that feels familiar for terrans, like the memory of an island sunset. His features might remind someone from Earth of a Polynesian man with strong cheekbones, a wide and gentle nose, and dark brown eyes that always seem to be watching, absorbing, waiting. When he smiles, it’s not to be polite. It’s because something truly touched him.
Even though he has no connection to Earth’s island peoples, it’s hard not to see him through the same lens. He seems to carry that same deep rhythm, like someone shaped by tide and tree and mountain wind. Everything about him says he belongs somewhere timeless, where things grow slowly and peace isn’t something to fight for but something to live.
(Uniform Description from Google)
Ryden wears a black duty jacket, sharp in its tailoring and fitted without being restrictive. A cool teal panel spans his shoulders and upper chest, clearly marking his role in the medical division. The material has a soft matte finish, catching just enough light to reveal its structure without drawing attention.
A diagonal seam cuts across the jacket from his right shoulder to the left side of his waist, adding a touch of asymmetry that gives the uniform a more modern, streamlined look. His collar is short and upright, and the charcoal-gray undershirt beneath has a subtle textured weave that breaks up the dark tones just enough.
Pinned neatly over his heart is the familiar Starfleet combadge, rendered in brushed steel that feels functional and earned, not ornamental. His black trousers are cut with clean lines and minimal stitching, allowing for ease of movement in medical bays or during fieldwork. Sturdy black boots complete the look, designed for both long shifts and unpredictable planetary terrain.
History
Ryden was born on the planet Ba’Ku after his people discovered the planet in the Briar Patch and settled there. The Ba’Ku people once lived on another world, a world that had fallen to an apocalyptic hubris in its pursuit of technology. One that threatened the wellbeing of its inhabitants. A decision was made by some of the elders, including his parents, to leave their home-world. Setting off to find somewhere to start a-new. Once there, they decided to denounce advanced technology beyond the most basic needs for farming, animal husbandry and other simpler forms of devices.
His parents, Baloo and Tiema could see that Ryden was highly empathic from an early age. He consistently showed a level of care and understanding of others and a desire to connect with them. A desire spurred on by the fact he had no siblings of his own. Thus, he would find as many friends as he could everywhere he went. Ryden was often seen as the life of the party and made bonds with others easily, these bonds only grew and deepened when he listened to them with genuine interest, displaying great effort to learn about them.
While still a child Ryden witnessed some of the older children rebuff the elders choices to not use advanced technology, they had a burning desire to leave Ba’Ku and see the universe. They wanted more than the planet offered to them and so left their people after being outcast by the elders for their attempts to subvert the very Ba’Ku way of life. Ryden secretly wished to go with them. He too wanted to experience more for himself but he knew such a decision would cause great strife to his family and friends so he made no effort to join them.
Like the others on Ba’Ku, Ryden was unaffected by the strange metaphisic radiation caused by the planet’s rings until he reached the maturity age of 18 when his aging would progress slower.
In 2375 Ryden would see the dissident children again. This time however, they wanted to take the Metaphysic Radiation with them. At first no one knew it was them but as their schemes were unfurled by offworlders known as “The Federation”. The truth came to light and with the help of the offworlders during some very tragic and frightening times, the dissidents were defeated. However as is the Ba’Ku spirit, the elders allowed the lost children to return home, reunited with loving family and supporting friends. The time for their healing had begun.
Ryden played no significant role in the events of his homeworld during the dissident plot. He like many others had simply followed the offworlders commands and made it through relatively unscathed. This did not sit well with him and b rought upon moments of guilt until it gave him a sense of purpose. Now determined to help. He thought long and hard about what he could do but after speaking with his fellow Ba’Ku, both those who were once Son’a and those who suffered at their hands. He realized he could help by listening and by offering advice. He learned how many of the dissidents experienced hardships all over the galaxy after leaving. How their bodies began failing them without the energy of the home planet’s rings, but they feared they wouldn’t ever be allowed back again.
He spoke with the villagers too, those who struggled with the trauma of the dissident plot and again realized. He could help by just caring and providing hope.
Enter Doctor Imam Tevin, a Betazoid from Starfleet medical. Doctor Tevin was an esteemed lecturer at Starfleet Academy and frequently traveled to distant planets as part of outreach missions to further her practice and add to her curriculum. Their paths crossed during a particularly delicate treatment involving a Son’a who was once a childhood friend of Ryden. This patient who had sought psychological care after years of estrangement from their family and their Ba’Ku society.
The case proved to be incredibly challenging due to the Son’a’s complex emotional history and the present cultural tensions on Ba’Ku, but it also became a pivotal moment in their partnership. Doctor Tevin demonstrated remarkable skill, using her abilities to gain the patient’s trust and uncover layers of emotional trauma. Inspired by her approach, Ryden contributed his own insights into Ba’Ku traditions of healing and mindfulness, which helped the patient reconnect with their roots while embracing recovery.
This shared triumph over adversity forged a deep bond between them, blending the wisdom of Ba’Ku and Betazoid practices into a unified approach that transcended some cultural boundaries. The experience not only cemented his admiration for Doctor Tevin and her interest in his progress but also ignited his determination to follow a path that would allow him to make a difference on an interstellar scale. Doctor Tevin’s mentorship on her visits became a guiding light.
After several visits, Doctor Tevin invited Ryden to join the Interstellar Medical Exchange Program. With the blessings of the elders. He would be allowed to go with Doctor Tevin on many different worlds. With her he would continue to learn about psychology/psychiatry and the continued practices of improving mental health.
Knowing how important it was to ensure his home planet’s progress, he devoted himself to using the knowledge he gained from the Medical Exchange to teaching and mentoring others on Ba’Ku and creating a foundation for continued mental health care. His efforts were embraced by his people; he was finally viewed as a trailblazer bridging traditional values and modern practices without sacrificing the spirit of either.
While away with her, he enjoyed when Doctor Tevin would continuously talk about Starfleet Academy. She would talk about Starfleet, she would talk about her students, she would talk about all the different events that she had experienced while being with Starfleet. As she did this Ryden felt more and more of a pull in a desire to join Starfleet himself. He wanted to create his own experiences.
With the help of experience in the medical field, especially from the medical exchange program and with many referrals from Doctor Tevin to aid him. Ryden finally applied for and was approved to enroll in Starfleet Academy.
There he would be an official student under Doctor Tevin and graduate with a bachelor’s in social sciences with several minors in medicine and xenobiology. Ryden would further go on into Starfleet Medical for a MD specializing in mental health and officially allow him to practice Psychiatry while also using his well-practiced Psychotherapy.
From there, he graduated at Lieutenant junior grade. And was assigned to Starbase Bravo. As a junior psychiatrist.
